Earth Art 2010

This course is a unique opportunity to explore the sculptural possibilities of earth materials working alongside the course tutors on a group and one to one basis

During the course we will explore the properties and potential of earth to express ideas and create form, using local & other materials, traditions and processes as a starting point.

Earth is a big subject; so we will look initially at how peoples have used earth materials and what for. Investigating these ideas will help to give us an idea of the meaning of earth to those who use it and, as a consequence what it means to us, possibly creating/rediscovering meanings.

We will encourage students to bring ideas with them and to absorb influences from the area to generate new ways to approach the making process. We will engage in discussion, investigation (through drawing, making maquettes and technical experimentation) to emerge at the end of the week with a series of group or individual projects completed and new approaches to a material and a landscape.

Throughout the course the tutors will assist by demonstrating techniques, discussing ideas and assisting with projects as necessary as part of a group or individually.

Everyone will be given a comprehensive understanding of earth materials, a free hand to be as ambitious as they would like and the scope to experiment with a material we often take for granted.
